ARIZONA CITY — Ward Alvie Roy, 92, of Arizona City, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, died on Feb. 12, 2013, at Casa Grande Regional Medical Center.
The graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mr. Roy was born on Dec. 20, 1920, in Wrentham, Mass. He served in the Navy beginning in 1938, first patrolling from Bermuda, then England and Iceland. When Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, he had 42 days left on his enlistment but quickly extended. In the Pacific he participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal, from 150 yards off the beach. He helped pick up survivors from sunken cruisers in the Pacific. He later spent a year in Korea, including in the invasion of Inchon.
He was honored at Memorial Day services in Casa Grande and participated in Veterans Day Parades. He was very proud of his service and was a docent at the Casa Grande Valley Historical Society for many years, greeting visitors. He worked as a mail clerk before retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ina O.
