SACATON FLATS — Velma Salina Chavez, 70, of Sacaton Flats died on Feb. 27, 2012, at home.
Visitation will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday at the Chavez home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 8 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Mission in Sacaton by the Rev. Gregory Rice. Burial will be in East Sacaton Cemetery.
Ms. Chavez was born on Feb. 4, 1942, in Sacaton and was a daughter of Homer Jackson and Naomi Castro. She was a homemaker and was devoted to her family. She played basketball in her younger years, enjoyed family gatherings and loved to dance to cumbias.
Survivors include two daughters, Terry Jackson of Sacaton Flats and Josephine Chavez of Phoenix; a son, Frank Chavez of Phoenix; a sister, Lucille Winnie of Phoenix; two brothers, Owen and Edmund Jackson of Sacaton; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Rico Jackson and Dwayne Pablo, and a sister, Phyllis Blackwater.
