Robert H. Snurpuss

Robert H. "Bob" Snurpus, 77, a longtime Casa Grande teacher and firearms safety instructor, died Nov. 5, 2007.


A private memorial service is planned.

Mr. Snurpus was born Dec. 28, 1929 in Evansville, Ind., and was a son of August and Iona Snurpus. He and his wife, June, moved to Casa Grande in 1952, where he began his teaching career. He was a social studies teacher at Casa Grande Junior High School for 35 years and taught firearms safety for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for 45 years. In 1988 he received an award for outstanding service to the Hunter Education Program.

After retiring he served as a docent for the Casa Grande Valley Historical Society for several years and particularly enjoyed conducting tours for schools.

Some of his interests included history of the Civil War, the Fur Trade Era, camping, hunting, being outdoors and spending time at the cabin that he and his family built near Nutrioso in the White Mountains.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Mark and Robert C. Snurpus, and a daughter, Dianna Snurpus. He was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly Snurpus.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Hospice Charitable Fund of Central Arizona, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Salvation Army or a charity of the donor's choice.
