Ola Mae Scurlock

December 16, 1925 — October 20, 2013

Ola Mae Scurlock, 87, a longtime Casa Grande resident, died on Oct. 20, 2013.
Ms. Scurlock was born on Dec. 16, 1925, in Crockett, Texas, the second of 13 children of Samuel and Viola Craig. She developed a personal relationship with her savior at an early age. She was educated and later married James Jackson and Bud Scurlock. She worked hard on farms in Texas and raised her children.
Seeing greater opportunities in the West she moved with her family to Arizona. She joined New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Jesse Hardeman. She was an active member of her church for many years until her health failed and restricted her attendance. She always kept up with what was going on at the church. Because of her faith, she was able to see beyond her discomforts and recognize the discomforts of others. She lived a selfless life, always concerned for her children and their needs, and would go the extra mile and help anyone in need. She volunteered at the Casa Grande Food Bank for almost 20 years.
A gifted and creative artisan, she could knit and crochet beautiful items out of nearly nothing. She also was a self-taught carpenter and built a workshop on her property. She had a "gift of gab" and will be remembered for her ability to start and finish a conversation with anyone about anything. She was a giving, caring, God-fearing woman who gave unconditional love.
Survivors include four sons and daughters, James Jackson and Ola Faye Kelley of Casa Grande, Michael Scurlock of Tucson and Cindy Weaver of Eloy; four brothers, Samuel Craig Jr. of Eloy, Alfred R. Craig of Riverside, Calif., Freddie Craig of Phoenix and Hareld Craig of Tucson; four sisters, Dorothy Butler of Phoenix, Eula Asher of Casa Grande, Ophelia Frazier of Tucson and Maxine Davis of Las Vegas; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Weaver; four sisters, Oleatha Craig, Mildred Brice, Clemontine Robbins and Sammie Graves; two grandsons, Jessie Kelley and Archie Sweat; and a great-granddaughter, Kameron Briell.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Southern Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Terry Harris officiating. Burial is at Mountain View Cemetery.
J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud The Gardens Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
