ARIZONA CITY — Marie Elizabeth Clegg, 88, of Arizona City died peacefully on Jan. 21, 2011, at Hospice Family Care in Casa Grande, with her husband at her side. A private service was planned.
Mrs. Clegg was born on Aug. 9, 1922, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to Frederick Glasser and Elizabeth Wich. She joined the Navy after Pearl Harbor was attacked and served during World War II. She was an airplane mechanic in Pensacola, Fla., where she met and married Vernon Clegg, and was an aviation machinist’s mate second class. She was a pioneer and helped prove that women are capable of doing a tough job well. She later was a homemaker and traveled the country with her husband, having seven children in various states.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years; seven adult children; a sister, Esther; two brothers, Charles and Bernard; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Paul and John.
