Hazel Martineau Nutter

May 27, 1925 — February 23, 2014

Longtime Eloy resident Hazel Martineau Nutter, wife of Gus A. Salazar, passed away quietly with her family by her side. Hazel Nutter was born May 27, 1925 in Decatur, Texas. She was the daughter of Elzear Joseph Martineau and Hazel Lee Burnett. Hazel taught school for many years in Pinal County and the Navajo Nation. She was the education supervisor for the Migrant Opportunity Program for Casa Grande Valley and also Man Power training and development. She was a member and past president of the Board of Directors for the Eloy Chamber of Commerce; president for the Picacho Water Board; member of the Pinal County Planning and Zoning Board; and belonged to many various other organizations. In later years she owned the Peak Trading Post at Picacho Peak. She became well-known for her fine jewelry and American Indian
arts & crafts. She was featured in Indian Jewelry of the Southwest by Dale Stuarte King, as well as in Ell Magazine both here and in Italy. She loved her family and always considered herself a teacher first.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Gustavo A. Salazar of Arizona City; two daughters, Julie Nutter Thornhill of Eloy, AZ and Fabiola Nutter Leija of San Diego, CA; one son, Emmett Burnett Nutter of
Eloy, AZ; six grandchildren, William Martineau Thornhill, Christopher Edward Thornhill, Julie Marie Zapata-Hernandez, DaShea Virginia Leija, Brittany Monique Leija, and Jasmine Amber
Leija; and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. "Bill" Nutter; one son, William Martineau Nutter; and her parents, Elzear Joseph Martineau and Hazel Lee Burnett.
Visitation will be Friday, February 28, 2014 at St. Helen of the Cross Catholic Church at 6:00 pm. A rosary will follow at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, March 1 at 10:00 am at the
church. Father Alonzo Garcia will be of ciating. Burial will follow at Eloy Memorial Park, Eloy, AZ.
