COOLIDGE — Eldon G. Mears, 80, died on April 21, 2013, in Coolidge.
Mr. Mears was born on Nov. 30, 1932, in Frankfort, Marshall County, Kan., to Ralph J. and Pearl I. (Lewis) Mears. At about age 1 he moved with his family to McPherson, Kan., where his father went to work for Sinclair Oil Corporation. When he was 14 he moved with his mother back to the Frankfort-Blue Rapids area, where he attended school until his enlistment in the Army at age 17. He served at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., and with the 5th Regimental Combat Team and 88th Military Police Company Honor Guard Platoon for X Corps Headquarters in Korea until his discharge in 1953.
He worked at various jobs until 1966, when he went to work for the Kansas Fish and Game Commission and then went into corrections work in Kansas and Missouri. He ended his career as a corrections officer in Arizona. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing and being at home with his dog and two cats.
Survivors include a daughter, Teresa I. Mears-Shoemaker of Gladstone, Mo.; a nephew; and a niece. He was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers, Ralph, Harold and Gerald.
No service will be held at Mr. Mears' request.
J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud Coolidge Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
