Carolyn Osife Smalley Bradley

March 14, 1951 — November 28, 2019

BAPCHULE - Carolyn Osife Smalley Bradley, 68, died on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 2019, after a brief illness, with her loving son and devoted husband at her side.

Mrs. Bradley, a member of the Gila River Tribe, was born on March 14, 1951, in Sacaton. She had over 30 years in federal service working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, starting in the Central Office, Washington, D.C., where she served as records officer for all of Indian Country and the BIA nationwide. She transferred to Albuquerque in the mid-1990s to serve with the Information Technology Policy Office, Office of Special Trustee and Facilities Management, and retired in 2006 from the Office of the Assistant Secretary Indian Affairs.

She was devoted to her family and very friendly. She went out of her way to care for her friends and family. When a Mandan Hidatsa Indian on travel with food poisoning (a stranger to her) was referred to her, she did not hesitate to go to her hotel and take her to a hospital for care. This is just one example of how she cared for others. She was famous for her smile, which lit up a room. She helped raise many of her friends' children and was considered a family member by many. She enjoyed her beloved rescue dog Marley, whom she found living alone near petroglyphs while out walking for her health.

Survivors include a son, Michael Smalley; her husband, Darrell Bradley; and a brother, John Osife of Fort McDowell. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Matilda Osife, and four brothers, William, Justin, Donald and Anthony B. Osife.

Rosary and visitation from 6 to 10 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at the District 5 Multipurpose Building. Funeral Mass celebrated at 8 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, at St. Peter Catholic Church, with burial following.

J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud The Gardens Chapel in charge of arrangements.
