CHUICHU — Augustine Baptisto Lopez Sr., 78, a former chairman of the Tohono O'odham Nation, died on April 18, 2013, at home.
Mr. Lopez will lie in state from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday at the tribal legislative chambers in Sells. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:15. An all-night wake will be held at the family home in Chuichu. Burial will be early Tuesday in Chuichu Cemetery.
He was born on Feb. 1, 1935, in Santa Rosa Village and was a son of Avalon and Theresa Joaquin Lopez. He served in the Air Force and worked as a cowboy, rancher and irrigator. He later was director of the Tohono O'odham Tribal Work Experience Program and established the tribe's Property and Supply Department. He was tribal vice chairman under the late Chairman Thomas Segundo and then chairman from 1971 to 1973.
He was a musician, playing the violin, drums, guitar and saxophone, and passed his musical gift on to his children. He also coached Little League baseball teams. His adult children remember him as a "stern, funny man."
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ida B.; four daughters, Nellie and Gertrude of Chuichu, Mary Russett of Rocky Boy, Mont., and Maureen Cruz of Boise, Idaho; two sons, Steve of Chuichu and Avery of Yerington, Nev.; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
