Alton A. "Al" Cobb

FLORENCE - Alton A. "Al" Cobb, 91, died peacefully at his home in Florence on April 28, 2020.

Mr. Cobb was born on May 8, 1928, in Cortland, New York, to Alexander and Bessie Cobb. He joined the Marine Corps as a teenager in 1944, during World War II, and retired in 1968. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal for participation in battles in the Western Pacific and the Purple Heart Medal for the battle of Okinawa. He was a member of the Marine occupation force in Kyushu, Japan, through June 17, 1946.

He later participated in the assault and seizure of Inchon in the Korean War. He participated in the Wonsan-Hungnam-Chosin Campaign, including the Chosin Reservoir battle, for which he received the Purple Heart. After 24 years of honorable service, he retired from the Marine Corps in October 1968. He finished a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting and obtained a law degree while he was assigned as the warden to the Navy brig in Yokosuka, Japan, from 1960 to 1964.

After his retirement, he worked as a deputy sheriff and jail manager for Weld County in Greeley, Colorado, and owned and operated a judo and karate school there. In 1981 he moved to Florence and worked in the Pinal County court system until he retired again in 2007.

Survivors include his wife and a nephew.

Memorial service will be held in Florence, with date to be announced. Military burial planned in Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery at Marana.
